In March 2023, Parents Defending Education asked the Denver Field Office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to investigate Jeffco Public Schools in Jefferson County, Colorado. The request claims the district is breaking Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a law that bans employers from discriminating against workers based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
A district flyer advertised “Employees of Color Gatherings” held monthly throughout the 2022-23 school year. The flyer described them as a way for employees of color to connect and to learn about, advocate for, and support equity and diversity in Jeffco. Te district’s 104-page agreement with its teachers’ union never says these opportunities are open to all employees. Under this policy, district employees might be denied as big of a voice in the district because of their race.
Defending Education urges the EEOC to investigate every claim in its request, fix Jeffco Public Schools’s illegal policies and practices, and order the right remedies.
