On April 26, 2024, Parents Defending Education filed a complaint against Summit School District in Frisco, Colorado, with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. DE claims the district broke Title VI, a law that bans race discrimination in programs that receive federal funds. Further, DE claims the district was violating the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause, which bars government bodies, including public schools, from treating people differently because of their race except in rare cases.
The district’s community engagement coordinator emailed Hispanic parents about meetings of a new parent group, the “Consejo de Familias Hispanas.” The complaint shows that invitations to the group were based only on race. It also points to a news report in which the district’s superintendent apologizes for comments about feeling “drained” by parent committees and “privileged white people.”
