Defending Ed Files Civil Rights Complaint Against Princeton University for Title IX Violations, Forcing Female Students to Share “Gender Neutral” Restrooms

On October 31, 2025, Defending Education (DE) filed a complaint against Princeton University with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. DE claims Princeton is breaking Title IX, a law that bans sex discrimination in schools that receive federal funds. Title IX protects women’s right to bathrooms and locker rooms of their own.

Princeton is older than the United States itself. But it now offers 250 “gender-inclusive” restrooms and all-gender dorms. And while Princeton admits that Title IX bans discrimination based on sex, its Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity treats it as “[s]ex or gender discrimination.”

At two of Princeton’s residential colleges, Yeh College and New College West, about 1,000 students share “gender-neutral” bathrooms with multiple showers and toilet stalls. First-year students can’t opt out, because Princeton randomly assigns them to their residential college. Princeton grants exceptions only for medical or safety reasons, not religious ones. Female students have protested. One wrote that knowing male students are there “scares me.”

Princeton takes pride in its transgender policies. It even holds a separate “Lavender Graduation” ceremony “celebrating queer and trans accomplishments and achievements.” The reality of biological sex appears to be a fiction at Princeton.

Defending Education urges the Department to investigate every claim in its complaint, fix Princeton’s illegal policies and practices, and order the right remedies.
