On September 29, 2021, the National School Boards Association (NSBA) sent a letter to President Biden which compared parents who speak up at school board meetings to “domestic terrorism” and inquired if citizens who speak up at school board meetings could be investigated under the Patriot Act by the FBI.

On October 4, 2021, a mere 5 days later, mobilized the FBI in response to this letter for what he described as “a disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence against school administrators, board members, teachers, and staff.”

After Freedom of Information Act requests were submitted by Parents Defending Education revealing how the letter and memo came to be, 26 state school boards associations have withdrawn membership, participation, or dues from the NSBA.

On October 22, 2021 the NSBA renounced the letter, apologized, and deleted the letter to the White House from its website. Despite this, Attorney General Merrick Garland has continually refused to retract his memo and disband the task force he had assembled in response to the NSBA.
