Speech First Sends Letter to Wichita State University

On April 26, 2021, Speech First, a national membership group of students, alumni, and others that defends free speech on campus, sent a letter to Wichita State University’s interim president, Dr. Richard Muma. Student senator Olivia Gallegos had suggested that student government honor Morgan Zegers, a prominent conservative woman, in a Women’s History Month social media post, to show inclusiveness toward “all ideologies.” In response, other students demanded that Gallegos resign or face a conduct charge, and some sent threats like “you got 4 hours to resign.”

The university said only that it “does not restrict students from free speech.” Speech First argued that this did not go far enough and urged the university to issue a public statement supporting free expression and a diversity of ideas on campus.
