On September 18, 2023, the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL) filed an amicus (“friend of the court”) brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to hear Speech First’s challenge to Virginia Tech’s bias incident policy and Bias Intervention and Response Team (BIRT). WILL argued that even though bias response teams usually cannot issue formal discipline, they burden speech by their very existence, because students know they may be reported as bigots for voicing views on controversial issues.
