On July 5, 2021, Speech First, a national membership group of students, alumni, and others that defends free speech on campus, asked the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia for permission to tell the court about a new Fourth Circuit decision. Speech First argued that the decision speaks directly to whether it has standing, rejecting Virginia Tech’s claim that Speech First lacks standing because the university supposedly has no history of enforcing the challenged policies.
