On April 14, 2023, Speech First, a national membership group of students, alumni, and others that defends free speech on campus, asked the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas to block two Texas State University (TXST) policies while its lawsuit goes on. Speech First argued that the university’s discriminatory-harassment policy punishes protected speech about political and social issues and that its computer policy bars students from using their university email for political speech, both in violation of the First and Fourteenth Amendments.
