On January 17, 2020, Speech First, a national membership group of students, alumni, and others that defends free speech on campus, filed its reply brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, asking the court to reverse the denial of a preliminary injunction against the University of Illinois. Speech First argued that it has standing to challenge the university’s ban on bias-motivated incidents and its use of “No Contact Directives,” and that the university’s change to its leafletting policy did not make that challenge moot.
