In February 2024, Parents Defending Education (PDE) sued the U.S. Department of Education in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
In July 2022, PDE asked the Department for its communications with several progressive groups about “gender support plans” and other “gender affirming” policies that may affect parents’ rights. Nineteen months later, the Department still had not released a single record and would not say when it might.
PDE’s members are deeply concerned about the Department’s ties to these outside groups, especially as it prepares sweeping rules that will affect millions of children. Keeping the records secret only adds to the appearance that something improper is going on. PDE filed this lawsuit to get public information that should already be available, so parents can understand who is pushing an agenda that could change education for generations.
