Shorewood High School principal and assistant principal support (and excuse absences) for protest organized by Young Democratic Socialists of America

Incidents

On April 11, 2022, Shorewood High School’s principal and assistant principal openly supported a protest organized by the school’s Young Democratic Socialists of America chapter in a letter to parents. The high school’s principal and assistant principal claimed in the letter that the student club is protesting “loan debt and the rising university tuition prices.” The two then claimed in the letter: “We applaud and support our students for using their voices to bring awareness to these important issues.

The principal and assistant principal explained in the letter that members of Young Democratic Socialists of America “have invited their fellow Shorewood High School students to join them on the SHS Front Lawn to listen to speeches related to these topics.” They further explained in the letter that students can have their absences excused for attending the protest. Students who participate “should have a parent/guardian call the SHS Attendance Office to have their 5th-7th hour absence marked as ‘excused.'”

The principal and assistant principal of Shorewood High School sent a letter to parents supporting a Young Democratic Socialists of America protest.
