Scituate School Department has policy to keep gender identity of students hidden from parents

Incidents

The Scituate School Department has a policy in place titled “Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Student Rights and Responsibilities.” The policy explicitly states that the gender identity of students can be hidden from parents: “School staff shall not disclose information that may reveal a student’s transgender status to others, including parents and other school staff, unless legally required to do so or unless the student has authorized such disclosure.” The policy then continues:

When contacting the parent or guardian of a transgender student, school staff should use the student’s legal name and the pronoun corresponding to the student’s gender assigned at birth unless the student, parent, or guardian has specified otherwise.

Staff are mandated to use the preferred pronouns of students: “Every student has the right to be addressed by a name and pronoun that corresponds to the student’s gender identity.” Students are allowed to use the restrooms and locker rooms as well as participate in sports according to their preferred gender identity.
