Parents Defending Education submitted a public records request to Maine School Administrative District 55 seeking any guidance on transgender issues. The district provided PDE with a document titled “Transgender Student Support Plan.” This form asks for a student’s “preferred gender identity,” “preferred gender expression,” and “preferred pronouns.”
This plan notably asks: “Under what circumstances will the student’s parents/guardians be notified of issues?” The next question then asks: “If the student is not out to their parents, how would the student like to handle potential disclosure situations?”
The plan states that students can use the restrooms and locker rooms that match their preferred gender identity. The plan also has a section dedicated to “gender fluidity.”
