On January 21, 2026, Defending Education (DE) joined Advancing American Freedom, former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III, and many other organizations in a brief supporting an emergency request to the U.S. Supreme Court in Mirabelli v. Bonta. The brief urged the Court to stop a California policy on secret social gender transitions that directs teachers to mislead parents about their children’s gender identity.
A group of parents and teachers challenged the policy after some of the parents learned their daughter had been socially transitioned at school and later attempted suicide. The federal trial court in San Diego ruled for the parents and teachers and permanently blocked the state from enforcing the policy. But the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit paused that order, leaving families and teachers exposed again.
As DE has documented here, these policies are part of a growing national trend. The Supreme Court has not yet ruled on whether they are constitutional, but it can’t afford to wait any longer. DE hopes California parents and teachers will soon get the relief they badly need.
