Teachers’ union proposed changing ‘mother’ to ‘birthing parent’

Parents and politicians only recently recognized that “woke” left-wing culture plays a large role in teachers’ unions and public education in general. Cue up the National Education Association (NEA) and a proposed resolution on gender.

Fox News reported that in the NEA Representative Assembly meeting, the resolution proposed to change the word “mother” to “birthing parent” in its contracts to include members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The resolution said, “Using this contract language, members need not worry about how a Board of Education/solicitor defines ‘maternity leave,’ ‘mother,’ and/or ‘father’; the language is an inclusive reflection of how LGBTQIA+ members build families.” Apparently, in order to be brought up for a vote by the assembly, 50 delegates had to sponsor it for debate and then a vote.

Although the language resolution was not brought for a vote by the assembly, it demonstrated how “woke” gender identity ideology has made its way into one of the powerful teachers’ unions in the country.

Parents’ rights groups condemned the proposed resolution and highlighted how teachers’ unions do not have parent’s or children’s best interests at heart.

Moms for Liberty’s Tiffany Justice called the NEA the “K-12 Cartel” because of their stranglehold on public education. She said, “We believe in American teachers, and we don’t believe that the lack of focus that the union has on children is represented.”

Another parent and leading activist, Nicole Neily of Parents Defending Education, said, “It’s horrifying” to hear such leftist terms being thrown around loosely. She claimed, “Normal people don’t use the term chestfeeding or birthing person or any of this stuff” and added, “I think it just further underscores how completely out of touch the teachers’ unions… are from the concerns of normal parents.”

No Left Turn in Education’s Elana Fishbein told Fox News, “They are arrogant. They are dismissive of the family, the parents. It’s beyond Orwellian. Even in science fiction, I don’t know if you can have such a script of complete destruction of human society.”

The NEA responded to criticism and called it a part of the debate among its members:

“Every year, NEA members submit New Business Items concerning a wide range of issues. Some are intimately tied to NEA operations and others reflect policy positions delegates would like the organization and its state-level affiliates to take. NEA is committed to democratic processes and open debate. These values are fundamental not just to NEA’s vision as a union but to our functioning as a multiracial democracy.”

Past resolutions from other annual meetings range from supporting a nationwide policy of mandatory masking and COVID vaccines in schools to slavery reparations, institutional racism, and other left-wing topics.
