A concerned community member reached out to Parents Defending Education about a middle school music teacher at West Allis-West Milwaukee School District passing out a form for students to fill out regarding their pronouns and gender identity. The teacher asks on the form: “What pronouns do you use? (e.g he/him, she/her, they/them).” The follow-up questions are then asked that appear to show the teacher will keep the preferred pronouns of students a secret from parents:
- May I use these pronouns in front of the class?
- May I use these pronouns when I contact home?
- May I use these pronouns in front of other teachers?
- Would you like to follow up with me about your name/pronouns?
The teacher also asks students on the form: “What is your legal name?” This question is then followed up with: “What is the name you would like to be called in class?” The next question asks: “May I call you this name outside of class?”
