Sunset Ridge Middle School Asks Students To Explore Their “Gender Story” and Uses Gender-Free Terms in Sex Ed

Incidents

Students in the health and sex-ed classes at Sunset Ridge Middle School in Northfield, Illinois were given lessons on exploring their gender identity and understanding puberty through a gender-free lens. 7th graders at the school were given a presentation differentiating sex at birth from their gender:

For the 5th graders, a lesson on puberty described men and women as “people with testicles” and “people with ovaries”:

In an email by the school explaining the choice, Sunset Ridge Principal Ivy Sukenik states that this policy is done to not disturb trans students and using the specific example of “some people with male anatomy are girls, so some girls may get spontaneous erections.”
