Newton Public Schools shows video to fifth-grade students that states gender is “how you feel inside your body and who you know yourself to be”

Incidents

On March 12, 2025, Tim Urban posted a video on X that was “shown to all 5th graders at elementary schools” in Newton Public Schools. The video features a young kid attempting to correct a doctor who had just determined that two newborn babies were a boy and girl. This kid then claims that sex and gender are different before explaining that gender is “how you feel inside your body and who you know yourself to be.” The kid then states that people’s gender and sex may not match.

The video appears to have been created by CBC Kids News. The website for CBC Kids News states: “We aim to cover the topics that kids care about. We aren’t your parents’ news. We aren’t a teacher site. We are real news, for real kids. Created for and with … kids.” The group also states: “You can trust that the information you read on CBC Kids News is well-researched, balanced and backed by facts. That’s because we follow the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.”

CBC Kids News is owned and operated by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). The CBC receives federal funding in Canada.

The video appeared to be created by CBC Kids News despite the group claiming children can “trust” them.
