Maine’s Mountain Valley Community School–a pre-K through 8th grade public school in Regional School District 10–will have a co-ed locker room when it opens in January 2026. This locker room was not in the original floor plan, dating back to March 2022.
The new floor plan portrays this locker room as an “athletic prep area,” as shown in the bottom right corner in dark blue. Located next to two PE offices, this space appears to have private toilet and shower stalls in a co-ed locker room set-up.

The original floor plan from March 2022 shows two identical locker rooms side by side, presumably one for boys and girls, with one sectioned-off individual toilet and changing area.

“You can see there is a dividing wall in the locker room,” school board member Kristen Chapman said about the original floor plan in a December 2025 meeting. “Why did that wall come down?…And on the current plan, you can come in, and walk all the way around and go up. And so that wall was removed.”
She continued, “As of right now, boys and girls go into one locker room, and that is not acceptable.”
The building construction cost for Mountain Valley Community School was estimated at $69 million. Regional School Unit 10 has proposed $565,984.49 towards Mountain Valley Community School in their 2026 draft budget.
