In its monthly Cultural Diversity & Equity Newsletter, the Iowa City Community School District included resources for commemorating Native American Heritage Month including lesson plans, take-home work, and other materials. As families celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, the district stated that “we must not forget that for many Native American and Indigenous individuals in our community, it is often a time of mourning or reflection on past generational trauma.”

The district urged families to look over “A Racial Justice Guide to Thanksgiving” which includes materials describing the holiday as a genocidal whitewash, how to make the holiday about social justice and dealing with a “racist uncle” at the table.
