Greater Johnstown School District has Gender Support and Gender Transition Plans that do not require parental involvement

Incidents

Greater Johnstown School District uses Gender Support and Gender Transition Plans that do not require parental involvement.

The District’s Gender Transition Plan includes a section entitled “Parent/Guardian Involvement”, which asks, “Are guardian(s) of this student aware and supportive of their child’s gender transition?” It continues, “If not, what considerations must be accounted for by implementing this plan?”

The District’s Gender Support Plan asks, “If the student’s guardians are not aware and supportive of the child’s gender status, how will school-home communications be handled?”

These plans are consistent with the District’s Gender Expansive and Transgender Students Policy, which states that “school personnel should not disclose information that may reveal a student’s gender expansive or transgender status presentation to others, including the student’s parents/guardians.”

The policy directs faculty members to “use the student’s legal name and the pronoun corresponding to the student’s gender assigned at birth” when contacting the parents/guardians of any student.

The policy also includes a”Names/Pronouns” section in which the District includes a list of sample Gender Neutral pronouns, that include “Zi/Hir” and “Ey/Em”.
