Georgia Department of Education administers same statewide health survey to 6th graders and 12th graders with highly specific questions about drug use

Incidents

The Georgia Department of Education has a health survey for students in the sixth grade through the twelfth grade for students throughout the state. Sixth graders are eleven years old and they take the same survey as eighteen year old students. The current survey is for fiscal year 2022 through 2024. The survey asks questions regarding drug usage. The survey asks students if they have taken tobacco products, alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamines, and heroin. The survey asks the following questions:

  • During the past 30 days, on how many days did you have at least one drink of alcohol?
  • During the past 30 days, on how many days did you smoke cigarettes?
  • During the past 30 days, on how many days did you use any other tobacco products?
  • During the past 30 days, on how many days did you smoke an electronic vapor product (such as Juul, e-cigars, e-pipes, vape pipes, vaping pens, e-hookahs, or hookah pens)?
  • During the past 30 days, on how many days did you use marijuana (also called pot, weed) or hashish?
  • During the past 30 days, on how many days did you use methamphetamines (also called speed, crystal/crystal meth, crank, ice, or uppers)?
  • During the past 30 days, on how many days did you use heroin (also called dope, smack, junk, or snow)?
  • During the past 30 days, on how many days did you use a prescription drug painkiller (such as Hydrocodone/Hydros, Oxycodone/Oxy, Gabapentin/Gabbies or Tramadol/Trammies) that was not prescribed to you?
  • During the past 30 days, on how many days did you use a prescription drug tranquilizer or sedative (such as Benzos, Xanax/Xans, Klonopin, or Ativan) that was not prescribed to you?

Parents are able to opt their children out of the survey. The Georgia Department of Education has both documents posted online.
