Flagstaff Unified School District has guidance that the gender identity of students can be hidden from their parents

Incidents

Parents Defending Education submitted a public records request to the Flagstaff Unified School District seeking any guidance on transgender issues. The district provided PDE with a document titled “Guidelines for Support of Transgender Students” that is dated December 2023. The guidance states that “balancing the needs of every student, transgender and cisgender students alike, can be a difficult proposition.” The guidance explicitly states that the gender identity of students can be hidden from parents:

Students may not have discussed their preferences regarding gender identity with their parents or guardians. When approached by a student regarding a change to their preferred gender identity, school staff should meet privately regarding how the student prefers to be addressed in class and in school communications home. School staff are not required to inform parents of a student’s preferences regarding gender identity and name against the wishes of the student.

Staff are also mandated to use the preferred pronouns of students: “Students should be addressed, to the maximum extent possible, by the name and pronoun that corresponds to the gender identity that is consistently asserted by the student.” Students are also allowed to use the restrooms and locker rooms and participate in overnight field trips according to their preferred gender identity.
