Fairfax County Public Schools committee creates draft of plan to implement gender ideology into elementary school curriculum

Incidents

On December 31, 2024, Fairfax Schools Monitor reported that Fairfax County Public Schools’ Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee (FLECAC) was asked by the school board to “explore instruction on gender identity in elementary school.” In meetings in October and November, every FLECAC member reportedly “favored lessons on transgenderism in elementary grades,” with one committee member seeing this as a sign of “leadership.” The idea was to introduce gender identity into the curriculum as early as first grade. The Fairfax Schools Monitor reported that the committee voted for this proposal 16-0.

Fairfax Schools Monitor then reported that a proposal draft was shared from the committee’s chairperson. This proposal has children in kindergarten learning about “two parent/guardian families” including “mother and father, two mothers, two fathers, and children.” The draft also states for first grade: “Discussion will include ways people are different including race, cultures and traditions, religions, and dis/ability. Dignity will be defined, and the definition of respect will be reviewed. Ways to treat others with dignity and respect will be presented.”

The draft states that for fifth grade: “The terms sex assigned at birth and gender identity will be defined. Identity will include the idea that for some people their sex assigned at birth and gender identity are the same and for some people their sex assigned at birth and gender identity are different.” The draft further states: “Students will define pronouns and recognize why some people may use pronouns that differ from their sex assigned at birth or are gender neutral.”

Fairfax Schools Monitor continued to report that in the December meeting the committee voted to add the word “gender” to the first grade curriculum.

Parents Defending Education found on the FLECAC page on the school’s website that gender ideology was, in fact, discussed at these meetings. In the December 11, 2024, meeting, the committee discussed the plan to “explore instruction of gender identity in elementary school and a more inclusive FLE curriculum overall.”

FLECAC intends for the school district to implement gender ideology into the elementary school curriculum.
