Emails reveal more posters in classroom at Hamilton High School in Los Angeles that are anti-Israel, anti-capitalism and pro-Fidel Castro; teacher given directive to remove some of them, also suspended for 1-3 days

Incidents

In September of 2021, Parents Defending Education reported highly political, anti-American and profanity laden posters hanging in a classroom at Alexander Hamilton High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District. We learned of them because a parent in the district sent us photographs of their child’s classroom. The classroom also had a collection of flags hanging including the BLM flag, transgender flag, Pride flag and Palestinian flag.

Emails obtained through a public records request reveal that there were additional posters in the classroom. It is clear that, in response to our first report, the school district began an investigation and initiated a series of disciplinary steps to include removal of certain posters. It appears that the flags can stay which is consistent the district’s initial statement to us in September.

District officials also recommended “the issuance of an NOUA [Notice of Unsatisfactory Act] with 1-3 days of suspension.

Below are the most relevant emails from our FOIA request:

Here is a look at the additional posters/decor, including those the teacher was instructed to remove. (The posters with Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and Angela Davis were deemed acceptable by school officials and not included in the list of items that must be removed.)
