Cocopah Middle School Wins Award For GSA Club’s Work In Allowing Students To Change Their Names Without Parents Permission

In December 2021, Cocopah Middle School won an award from the Phoenix chapter of the Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) for their successful changing of school policy to allow students to change their name on their ID’s without parental knowledge. GLSEN is the creator of and heavily promotes the introduction of GSA clubs into schools all across the country.

At the awards, a student in the GSA club spoke about how the teacher supervisor encouraged the students to speak out and convince the district to change the ID policy:

GLSEN not only promotes more sexuality education in school but also focuses heavily on intersectionality and fighting racism. Some of their recommendations to creating inclusive programming are as follows:
