The Central Falls School District has a policy in place titled “Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming Students.” The policy explicitly states that the gender identity of students can be hidden from parents: “School personnel should consult with the student before involving parents and ensure respectful communication regarding pronoun use. If discussing a student’s gender identity might endanger them, it should be avoided.” The policy then reiterates this point:
Schools should not discuss a student’s gender identity with the parent(s) or guardians(s) if school personnel believe it may jeopardize the student’s physical or mental safety.
The district then cites GLSEN in stating: “School staff should work closely with the student to assess the degree to which, if any, the family will be involved in the process and must consider the health, well-being, and safety of the transitioning student.” The organization GLSEN is known for targeting children with LGBTQ issues.
Staff are mandated to use the preferred pronouns of students: “Otherwise, the student’s preferred name is used, requiring collaboration among school, student, and family.” Students are allowed to use the restrooms and locker rooms as well as participate in sports according to their preferred gender identity.
