Castro Valley Unified School District paints murals on all schools of “Progress Pride Flag”

On September 3, 2022, the Castro Valley Unified School District posted on Facebook that “Progress Pride Flags are being painted as murals on each school campus” and that the district’s Board of Education “approved the project” in February. This includes elementary schools. The school district’s actions additionally led to protests that occurred later in the month with people protesting on both sides of the issue.

Castro Valley Unified School District explained on Facebook that all schools within the district would receive murals of “Progress Pride Flags.”

The school appears to promote predominantly left-wing political issues. The district’s BoardDocs website has several featured images that promote controversial political causes. Images include support for Black Lives Matter, illegal immigration, feminism, and the LGBTQ movement.

The school district has a history of supporting political issues. The district’s website explains that “the Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution affirming that Castro Valley Unified School District as a Safe Haven School District” on February 6, 2017. The website continues to explain that the district “is committed to the success of all students regardless of their national origin, ethnicity, religion, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression or economic status.” The “Safe Haven School District” page on the website provides numerous resources for students who may be in the country illegally.

The page also explains that the school district is part of a group called the “Castro Valley Community Alliance.” This group works to promote issues regarding “social justice.” One name listed as part of the group is the LGBTQ organization “Castro Valley Pride.”

The school district has a history of supporting political issues.
