Carson City School District provides training to staff promoting LGBTQ ideology

Incidents

Parents Defending Education submitted a public records request to the Carson City School District seeking any guidelines the district has regarding transgender issues. The district provided PDE with a policy titled “Safe and Respectful Learning Environment Free from Bullying, Cyber-Bullying and Discrimination Based on Race” that was most recently revised on October 10, 2023. Despite appearing to be a policy about racial bullying, the policy explains that the district will provide training for staff “concerning the needs of students with diverse gender identities or expressions.”

A representative of the school district explained to PDE that training is offered to staff on LGBTQ issues from “Absorb/Pool Pact.” The organization offers human resources assistance to public entities in Nevada. The district specifically offers the course to staff titled “Making Schools Safe and Inclusive for LGBTQ Students.” The following description for the course was provided to PDE: “This course is designed to provide information about how to make your school more inclusive for people with diverse sexual and gender identities. Topics covered include challenges faced by students who are LGBTQ, how to help LGBTQ students feel safe and respected, tips for speaking with students and ways to create a positive school culture.”

The representative of the district provided more information about LGBTQ training for staff.
