Arizona Education Association sends out letting claiming to be “the union thugs we are meant to be”

On November 9, 2024, Arizona State Senator Anthony Kern shared a letter on X from the Arizona Education Association. In this letter, the union’s president appeared to claim that the union consisted of “thugs.” The union president, Marisol Garcia, stated: “We are going to be the union thugs we are meant to be…we will fight, because together we are always stronger and whether we like it or not, it is our destiny to be in the fight.”

The comments appeared to be in response to President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 election. She previously stated in the letter: “We will not comply in advance, we will not shirk, we will not forget the fights we have survived nor will we not prepare to protect those who are being targeted.”

Marisol Garcia notably has politically biased activity on her X account, including sharing posts attacking House Speaker Mike Johnson and promoting Vice President Kamala Harris. After the election result was declared, she stated on X that “elections are one tactic” but “organizing for solidarity and power is another.”
