Alamo Heights Schools announces ‘District Equity Council’

Incidents

On Oct. 12, 2020, in San Antonio, Tex., Alamo Heights Junior School Principal Laura Ancira sent parents an email announcing a “District Equity Council” led by Dr. Jimmie Walker, the executive director of curriculum and instruction. Parents raised issues with the spending of funds on this new effort.

The impetus for the formation of this council was an uproar after a racially offensive video leaked to the public that involved three female students using the ‘n word.” Two black students who recently graduated from the district, according to local news, “spent this summer meeting with district leaders to create a more inclusive environment for Black and Hispanic students at Alamo Heights. On July 20, the district’s board of trustees agreed to create a district equity council.”
