12-year-olds at Montgomery County Public Schools asked to define “Gender Expression,” “Sex Assigned at Birth,” “Gender Identity,” and more

In a Middle School “Family Life” lesson for Grade 7 (ages 11-12) at Montgomery County Public Schools during the week of October 13, 2025, students were asked to match definitions to the following vocabulary words: “Sex Assigned at Birth”, “Gender Identity”, “Transgender,” “Gender Expression”, and “Cisgender.”

In the exercise, gender identity “Refers to a person’s internal sense of being male, female, or transgender”, “How you feel. Girl, boy, both or neither.”

The matching definition for “transgender” reads, “When your gender identity (how you feel) is different than what doctors/midwives assigned to you when you were born…”
