The Red Clay Consolidated School District has a policy in place titled “Transgender and Gender Diverse Students.” The policy explains that staff can keep the gender identity of students hidden from parents:
Transgender and gender diverse students have the right to discuss and express their gender identity openly and to decide when, with whom, and how much to share private information. When contacting the parent or guardian of a transgender or gender diverse student, school personnel should use the student’s legal name and the pronoun corresponding to the student’s gender assigned at birth unless the student, parent, or guardian has specified otherwise.
Staff are mandated to use the preferred pronouns of other students: “A student has the right to be addressed by a name and pronoun that corresponds to the student’s gender identity as asserted at school.” Students are allowed to use the restrooms and locker rooms as well as participate in sports according to their preferred gender identity.
