Sample Message Requesting SEL Lessons

Resources

Schools around the country are making concerted efforts to teach divisive concepts in MANDATORY (no-opt-out process) SEL classes. This may occur in SEL specific classes, homeroom, advisory or in any subject class throughout the day.

We have heard from many parents across the county that their children’s schools won’t send them the lessons. This is a VIOLATION of the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment, which gives parents the right not just to review, but PREVIEW their children’s curricula. These schools are knowingly or unknowingly breaking the law.

Here’s a template for an email/letter that you can send your child’s school requesting to review these lessons, which is your RIGHT:

Dear _______, My son/daughter is in _____ grade. I would like to see all Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons for ____ grade at ________ school for the 2022-2023 academic year, as per my right granted under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment.”

Search to find your schools FOIA (or public records) officer on your school’s website. This is the person you will send the message to. Try it with a narrow and wide frame. Pick a grade and a school. Or pick a grade across the district, or all SEL lessons in one school. You have the right as a taxpaying resident to view these lessons.
