Defending Ed sends letter to general counsel at NYC Department of Education

Press Releases

In 2024, Defending Ed filed a Freedom of Information Law request with the New York City Department of Education regarding immigration and migrant student education within the City. Despite multiple requests for an extension and a delay of over two years, the Department has still failed to produce the required documentation, despite its legal obligation under state law. On February 26, 2026, Defending Ed wrote to the Department of Education’s general counsel requesting that the Department comply with its production requests within 20 days.

Freedom of information laws are designed to keep the government and its officials accountable to the people they serve. We look forward to a speedy resolution of this long-standing effort to achieve transparency in New York City.
