Loudoun Co ‘equity consultant’ on public education: ‘Adults are in the way… kids change much faster’

The co-founding partner of the consulting firm hired by Loudoun County Public Schools to incorporate equity and inclusion initiatives into their learning curriculum for students is asserting that public education should be more about “relationships” than “learning.”

“I think the thing that public education offers… because I certainly don’t think we offer learning… are relationships… What historically high schools were for was dissemination of information very quickly… Well, actually the internet is better than the high school is… Truthfully, the teacher in relation to the dissemination of information is obsolete. But the teacher in relationship to relationships is the thing,” Equity Collaborative co-founder Jamie Almanzán declared in a video.

“To change adults… sometimes I wonder whether it’s even worth it. Sometimes you’re like ‘Just forget it.’ They should just get out of the way. Kids change must faster. Adults are in the way,” he continued in the video which was shared Tuesday on Twitter.

“I actually think it’s easier to create a productive conversation about equity when you’re talking about equity as opposed to addressing inequity. My job, my idea, is to shift our language to coming up with the outcome we want to see and then addressing the inequities that prevent us from getting to that outcome. People are down for equity, people are not down for challenging inequity,” Almanzán claimed.

Almanzán encouraged teachers and administrators to “practice” their diversity training on adults who are set in their ways in order to be better prepared to bring children into the fold since they are much easier to persuade.

Loudoun County Public Schools engaged the Equity Collaborative in 2019 and paid them in excess of $500,000 in taxpayer funds to insert Critical Race Theory in school curriculums, according to Parents Defending Education.

Included in the contract was an eight-day “Systemic Equity Assessment” that was presented to county staff, students, and community members. It was led by three Equity Collaborative consultants who were paid $5,000 per day per consultant.

The district also paid out $32,000 to Equity Collaborative for a “District Equity Plan” that was led by Graig Meyer and Jamie Almanzan. On top of that, the group received $40,000 to provide “Equity Driven Central Office Leadership” to LCPS for five months in 2019. In November 2019, they also ponied up an additional $22,000 for a four-day “Equity in the Center Co-Facilitation,” with Almanzan receiving $5,500 a day.

The Equity Collaborative markets interactive programs to “create educational equity and social justice by addressing bias and oppression.” The group’s services include a “racial equity institute,” “equity-focused” coaching, and “culturally responsive practice workshops.”

The group brazenly advertises that its “Advanced Practice Series” teaches “Equity Leadership through a Critical Race Theory Lens.”

“This institute is our series for advanced conversations about equity, all driven through an approach that turns Critical Race Theory into practices for building equitable learning environments. The sessions focus on applying Critical Race Theory as a form of practice for interrupting systemic racism and creating more equitable learning environments. These conversations are for equity practitioners who are ready to move from changes in their own practice to changes that interrupt the existing system of schooling,” the group’s website states.

Many think just the opposite, that school should be primarily focused on learning and find it interesting that LCPS is in fact apparently utilizing Critical Race Theory:
