San Mateo County Office of Education provides ‘Environmental and Climate Justice’ resources

Investigations

The San Mateo County Office of Education webpage titled “Antiracism and Injustice Resources” has a section on the “Environmental Justice Movement.” It states that the “concept of climate justice builds further on this topic, exploring how Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Asian American communities disproportionately shoulder the burden and impacts of the Climate Emergency (caused by human enhanced global warming).”

The Office of Education offers a resource document which defines environmental justice as “the disproportionate exposure of communities of color and the poor to pollution, and its concomitant effects on health and environment, as well as the unequal environmental protection and environmental quality provided through laws, regulations, governmental programs, enforcement, and policies.”

The document section titled “Environmentalism and Environmental/Climate Justice – A Focus on Anti-Racism and the Inclusion of BIPOC Voices” states that the resource provides a “starting point for the why, how, and who of integrating anti-racism and BIPOC voices.” It includes links to additional resources such as Greenpeace and Black Lives Matter.
