Investigations


The University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee offers an undergraduate certificate in Comparative Ethnic Studies, which explores the “the nature and development of ethnicity, that is, the sense of community which a people possesses in its own cultural and racial heritage.”

  • The program includes “the investigation of a group’s social patterns, history, language, religion, literature, and folklore.” 

Students are required to take “ETHNIC 101 – The Multi-Racial Origins of American Cultures,” “ETHNIC 102 – Transnational Migrations: People on the Move,” and several elective courses.

The course studies the “origins and development of racial and ethnic identities in the Americas, with specific attention to Wisconsin history and contemporary issues.”


The course studies the “modern and contemporary social and cultural processes of migration and identity; role of law as ‘gatekeeping’; history of nativism, interethnic relations, and community formation. Experiences of migrants, refugees & asylum-seekers.”


Students must choose from a variety of far-left elective courses, such as:

AFRIC 163 – Black Racial and Cultural Identity

HIST 229 – History of Race, Science, and Medicine in the United States

JAMS 450 – Race and Ethnicity in the Media

URB STD 360 – Perspectives on the Urban Scene: (The History of Milwaukee’s Ethnic and Racial Communities)
