On July 9, 2015, Broward County Public Schools accepted a grant from the Wallace Foundation for $1,700,000 to participate in the Foundation’s “Principal Supervisors Initiative,” which is one of many initiatives the Foundation has funded to help districts “improve the effectiveness of the administrators who oversee principals.” The Wallace Foundation’s mission is to “foster equity and improvements in learning.”
The school district also received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a partnership with Florida International University’s School of Education and Human Development to participate in its math literacy and equity initiative called FLAME. In a reflection statement from FLAME regarding racial justice, the organization states that “no longer, can anyone allow our students to be used as sacrificial lambs to undemocratic engines of oppression.” Continuing, the alliance says, “we are ramping-up our actions to support our students in liberating themselves from that trap.”
