Shaler Area School District leans into antiracism

Incidents


On June 5, 2020, the Shaler Area School District issued a Statement reaffirming [its] commitment to students and families of all backgrounds, asserting “The tragic death of George Floyd and other similar incidents of racial inequality highlight the importance of teaching acceptance, inclusion, and anti-racism.”

An article posted under the SASD Diversity Initiative, “Ten Things You Can Do To Fight Prejudice and Racism,” suggests parents “Examine [their] own prejudices, biases, and values,” “be an anti-racist parent,” “[c]hallenge “top-down” or institutional racism,” and “[t]each tolerance,” recommending the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance program as a resource.

On March 17, 2021 the Board of Directors of the Shaler Area School District voted on a resolution to support the development of an anti-racist school climate.
