Pierce Middle School sponsors race-based ‘affinity groups’

Incidents

On Oct. 22, 2020, Pierce Middle School’s “Mosaic Club” held its first meeting. In a letter from the school principal to parents, the Mosaic Club is described as “an affinity group for students of color who identify as African American/Black, Latinx/Hispanic-American, Native-American, Middle-Eastern-American, Asian/Asian-American, or Multiracial.”

There are many “affinity groups” established in schools and universities across the country.

The principal sent a message affirming the school’s commitment to continuing the “affinity groups” they piloted pre-COVID. He said the race-based grouping were an integral part of providing an “anti-racist and equitable education for all children.”
