Newton Schools embrace affinity groups, teach students they must “dismantle racist structures, ideas and practices” and replace them with “antiracist structures, ideas and practices”

The Newton Public Schools brought on their first director of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in October of 2020 and has since created a Race and Achievement Leadership Team (RALT).

In February of 2021, the district hosted a webinar entitled, “The Work and Challenges of Being Antiracist.”

Newton schools have also embraced the concept of “affinity groups” — it is unclear if they are separating students by race but we know they are being used with staff.
