Lesson plans English lesson plans at La Quinta High School teaches that students are inherently privileged if male, cisgender, white, christian

Incidents

Students in a 9th grade English class at Quinta High School in the Desert Sands Unified School District in California were subjected to highly ideological lesson materials during the week of November 15-19, 2021. The lessons asserted that students are inherently privileged if they are male, cisgender, white and/or Christian.

The lesson plans appear to have been taken from the “Check Your Privilege” campaign, a 2014 campaign by the University of San Francisco’s Intercultural Center.

The “Check Your Privilege” campaign defines privilege as “unearned access to social power based on membership in a dominant social group.”

To the district’s credit, they responded to questions from the Daily Signal and acknowledged that the lesson materials were not approved:

“the lesson was not in alignment with the district-adopted curriculum” and “actions are being taken to rectify the situation.”

“The teacher was operating outside the scope of [the] adopted curriculum and had potentially presented a biased position. Corrective action is underway.” — Mark Perry, district public information officer
