On January 28th, middle schoolers–aged 11-13–were invited to attend a Spectrum Group meeting during lunchtime in a teacher’s classroom.

The subject of meeting, presented during a morning announcement, was as follows: “We’ll be talking about LGBTQ+ books and movies and watching some short films together.”

This meeting occurred without parents receiving any notice or opportunity to ensure that their middle school children not attend.

‘If you’re part of SPECTRUM or interested in being an ally, you’re welcome to join us,” students were told during this morning announcement.

The Cherry Creek Board of Education has a policy in place intended to protect students from participating in surveys, assessments, analysis, or evaluation related to “sexual behavior and attitudes,” among other topics. Under the policy, written parental or guardian consent is required when dealing with sensitive topics.
