Fairfax County Public Schools appeared to purposefully leave community member off of advisory committee to redraw school lines
Incidents
On March 7, 2025, the Fairfax County Times reported that Fairfax County Public Schools asked community members to join a “FCPS Superintendent’s Boundary Review Advisory Committee” for the district’s controversial plan to redraw school boundaries. A parent reportedly filed a public records request and received a video where a randomizer chose the community member who would be part of the committee.
The number of a parent was called out once chosen. The district’s chief experience and engagement officer then stated: “We’re going to have to go and get that spreadsheet redone. That’s why we have someone out there. Can we skip to the next one?” The president of the Fairfax County Council PTA stated: “We can clear that.” That community member’s name was ultimately not on the final list for the committee’s membership. The news outlet reported:
According to local parents, parent No. 35 is a Great Falls mother who has regularly emailed the school board, submitting complaints against a lack of transparency in the redistricting process and voicing concerns that the board is pushing an agenda; she has also emailed Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s office and other state entities.
The community member appeared to be deselected from the list.
