DC Elementary School hosts race-based ‘affinity dialogue groups’ for parents and caregivers; email makes clear that all are not welcome

Incidents

F.S Key Elementary School’s “equity team” sent an email on Nov 28, 2021, with information about upcoming “affinity dialogue groups” for parents and caregivers, defined by the school as “brave spaces where everyone in that group shares a particular identity.”

The groups included: “BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) Dialogue Group,” the “International Community Dialogue Group” and the “Seeing White Podcast Dialogue Group.”

The email made it clear that the groups were not open to everyone. Instead, the email explicitly stated that “only people who can speak from the ‘I’ or ‘we’ perspective with that particular group can be part of it.”

The groups are similar to “affinity groups” in other schools, in violation of federal law.

Below is the full text of the email that was sent by the school’s equity team. It can also be viewed here as a webpage.
