Incidents
Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) features a website titled Transgender Reading Lists which includes books for students as young as preschool. According to the site, “many of these books are available through Berkeley school libraries as a physical and/or ebook.”
The page states that BUSD “stands with our transgender and gender non-conforming students and wishes to affirm its commitment to providing a learning environment where every student is safe and has the opportunity to express themselves and live authentically.”
BUSD has a transgender policy that allows staff to keep a student’s transition hidden from parents.
The Preschool & TK page includes books such as Julian is a Mermaid and Julian at the Wedding, The Pronoun Book, and Teo’s Tutu.
The K & 1st Grade page features books such as Born Ready: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope, Sylvia and Marsha Start a Revolution, and It Feels Good to Be Yourself: A Book About Gender Identity.
The 2nd & 3rd Grade page includes Call Me Max and Me and My Dysphoria Monster.
