American Association of School Administrators hosts race-based affinity groups at National Conference on Education

Incidents

On March 6, 2025, the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) posted on X that the organization “for the first time” would be “offering two affinity spaces for Latino/a educators and Black educators” at the 2025 National Conference on Education (NCE). The AASA is an organization consisting of America’s superintendents overseeing public schools. The conference took place March 6-8, 2025, in New Orleans.

In a post following up on the previous comment, the AASA shared a form titled “AASA Affinity Group Interest.” The organization states: “AASA is excited to launch two new professional communities within our organization for Black and Latino/a leaders. These affinity groups will create dedicated spaces for superintendents and district leaders to connect, collaborate, and support one another in their leadership journeys.” The form asks participants if they want to join the “Affinity Group for Latina/o Educators” or the “Affinity Group for Black Educators.” Affinity groups are groups of people segregated by their characteristics, such as race and ethnicity.

The AASA shared these posts on X.
Participants could fill out this form for participation in affinity groups.
