DEI Hiring: San Mateo Union High School District

Incidents

The San Mateo Union High School District states in its Racial Equity policy that the district will “advance the representation of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) at all levels within our school district, to the extent legally permitted.” The policy says the district will “adopt the use of hiring policies and procedures that are targeted to increase representation of BIPOC in all applications for district vacancies” with the “goal of reflecting the demographics of San Mateo County in the district staff.”

The policy also states that the district will “regularly review and update the hiring and retention policies with an equity lens to ensure intended and just outcomes for BIPOC as needed” and “develop programs that support the experience of BIPOC staff so that the district can improve retention, job satisfaction, and their psychological safety and well-being.”

According to its 2023-24 Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), the district increased the “hiring of BIPOC administrators with 70% of the hires in 2022-2023 school year identified as BIPOC.” It also states that the district increased the “number of teachers who identify as Latino/Hispanic” to “26% of new teachers.”
